Positive thoughts- When they do not seem to help the way you play golf.
Here is a strategy so you can manage your mind more effectively.
As a golf performance coach, I frequently get asked how I can be more consistent with my golf game?
Learning to manage your thoughts and emotions through being more aware can matter significantly to us as golfers and people.
Often, I hear that a golfer did think a positive thought, a few times prior and at beginning of their round.
So, what is going on? Why is this not working for you?
3 things to look for about your thoughts:
- Your thoughts may be too big a stretch for your current reality. ( for example, you need to birdie the last four holes to make it into a regional golf event…when it’s not believable as in the last few years you have averaged 1-2 birdies a round)
- What is your pulse on the thought? You should be prepared for a “to and fro” in your head. It will be uncomfortable; can you believe the thought at a value of 7 or above on a scale of 1-10? Learn to buy-in by training your brain and emotions? Learn to play the game in your head. Despite the discomfort ,it is a challenge with the old, negative thought. Keep repeating the new more useful thoughts! Stop, notice useless thoughts.
- Be intentional with your positive thought.(sometimes old thoughts creep in).Play the game, whilst being the noticer of your thoughts…..what’s your next best thought up the ladder towards improved believability, and more useful, consistent thoughts. It’s worth learning how to engage in the “mental back and forth” with your thoughts and emerge victorious with this practical strategy. You can discover how to reshape your mindset and find more joy in your game.
